Your Instagram DMs May No Longer Be Truly Private From Tomorrow
A major privacy change is about to hit instagram — and most users still have no idea it’s happening.
Starting May 8, instagram will officially discontinue support for end-to-end encrypted direct messages, meaning private chats on the platform will no longer have the extra layer of protection that prevented even Meta itself from reading them.

Now, instagram is walking away from it.
Meta says the decision comes down to low usage, claiming very few users actually enabled encrypted DMs on Instagram. The company is now encouraging people who still want encrypted communication to move to whatsapp instead.
But critics aren’t buying the explanation.
Privacy advocates argue that instagram buried the feature deep inside settings, never made it default, then pointed to low adoption as justification for removing it entirely. Others believe growing pressure from law enforcement agencies and child safety groups played a major role in the decision.
And that’s where the debate gets explosive.
Supporters of encryption say weakening private communication tools creates dangerous precedents for surveillance, censorship, and data exploitation. Opponents argue platforms need more visibility into private chats to combat scams, exploitation, and illegal activity online.
