Sardar 2 Ticket Pricing Raises a Bigger Question: Are Telugu Audiences Being Taken for Granted?
Telugu audiences have spent years proving they will embrace great cinema, regardless of language. But what happens when that loyalty starts being treated like a blank cheque? That uncomfortable question is now exploding around Karthi’s Sardar 2, which arrives in theatres on September 11, with Annapurna Studios handling its release across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
1. THE PRICE GAP IS IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE.
Reports indicate that a PVR ticket in Chennai is around ₹180 plus taxes, while a comparable PVR experience in Hyderabad reportedly costs roughly ₹295 plus taxes. That immediately raises eyebrows. Why should a Telugu viewer seemingly pay significantly more to watch a dubbed Tamil film than an audience watching it in its original market?
2. AND THIS ISN’T THE FIRST TIME.
A similar argument erupted around Toxic, when Hyderabad ticket prices were reportedly higher than those at certain Bengaluru multiplexes. One incident can be dismissed as pricing strategy. Repeated instances start looking like a pattern audiences are justified in questioning.
3. TELUGU STATES AREN’T A CASH MACHINE.
Telugu audiences have enthusiastically embraced Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi and international cinema whenever the content delivers. That loyalty helped make this market enormously valuable. But passion should never be mistaken for permission to overcharge.
4. THE REAL DAMAGE COULD COME LATER.
With ticket prices climbing and multiplex food costing a small fortune, a family theatre outing is already becoming expensive. Push that too far, and audiences have an obvious alternative: wait for OTT.
Sardar 2 may have legitimate commercial factors behind its pricing. But the question remains: If Telugu audiences are important enough to chase, why aren’t they important enough to respect?
