IRCTC will not sell passenger/customer data...


IRCTC i.e. indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation has withdrawn the plan to sell data. In fact, irctc had announced recently that it is planning to raise money soon by selling the data of railway passengers and freight passengers. There was a lot of controversy on this too. However, now this plan has been withdrawn.


Objective of tender

IRCTC had told in the tender that it aims to earn Rs 1000 crore by selling this data. Meanwhile, on Friday, irctc informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information technology Affairs that it has now withdrawn this tender. congress MP shashi tharoor is the chairman of the Parliament's Standing Committee on Information technology Affairs.

According to an official statement, "Government of india has withdrawn the Personal Data Protection Bill 2018, in view of which irctc has withdrawn the tender issued on 29 July for the appointment of Consultants for Data Sales of indian Railways."

Experts raised questions on IRCTC

After listening to the plan of data sale, many experts questioned the plan of IRCTC. Experts had said it put the privacy of passengers at risk. After this, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information technology Affairs called irctc officials for a meeting on august 26 to know about the security and privacy in this matter.

what was in the tender?

According to the irctc tender, the Railways wanted to appoint such consultants who can give suggestions regarding monetizing the data like name, age, mobile number, gender, address, and email id of the passengers. It was also clarified in the tender that the selected company will have to implement the data monetization strategy from preparation.
