Surekha Sikri had intended to be a journalist, according to sources. However, after seeing a play in college, she changed her mind and chose to pursue a career as an actor. surekha sikri became a student at the National school of Drama. She graduated from drama school in 1971 and made her bollywood debut in 1979 with the film Kissa Kursi Ka.
Surekha Sikri received the National Award for Best Supporting Actress for her roles in the films Tamas (1988), Mammo (1995), and Badhaai Ho (2018) With this prize, she set a record by winning three National Awards in a row, a record she currently retains. She starred in several films, including Sarfarosh, Dillagi, Zubeidaa, and others, but it was only when she portrayed a stern Dadi Sa in balika vadhu that she became a household name. Her performance was well-received.
Surekha Sikri reportedly had family ties with Naseeruddin Shah. Her elder sister Manara Sikri was his first wife. Their daughter Heeba played the younger version of Dadi Sa in Balika Vadhu. She is believed to be her ex-husband's former brother-in-law.
