Kapil Dev: 'Dhoni’s case was special'

Fans and analysts alike have greeted MS Dhoni's selection as the indian team mentor for t20 world cup with warm arms. The tournament will be held in the uae and oman in october and november this year. Kapil Dev, India's World Cup-winning captain in 1983 however, made an intriguing point when he said that a player should only return to the mainstream after three to four years of retirement. It is been a little over a year since dhoni announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket on august 15, 2020.
“It was a fantastic choice (to designate dhoni as the mentor),” Kapil remarked at a kolkata event, before adding that the bcci may have created a "special exception" for dhoni to join squad as a mentor only a year after his retirement.
"I've always believed that once a cricketer quits, he should return to the game after three to four years, but with the world cup approaching, this appears to be an exception. ravi (Shastri) is also on board with Covid, so it appears to be a unique situation "Kapil continued.
While announcing India's team for the showpiece event, the bcci secretary stated Dhoni's assignment was exclusively for the t20 World Cup.
