Painful history page May 1 ..! Labor Day..!
Every comfort we experience today contains long struggles and pains. May 1 is something we have forgotten. May 1st is a holiday for many of today's generation. Holidays are left for Labor Day. But its history is full of pain. Human labor was predominant during the 19th century. At that time, each of the major nations of the world was vying to overthrow one another in power and development. The biggest dice used for this were the workers. There is no guarantee of workers' safety or their well-being. It was a period when workers worked 18 to 20 hours daily. But, their pay is very, very low.
It was not until the beginning of the workers' struggle in Philadelphia, the USA in 1806, that the plight of the workers became visible to the world. The first workers' union in the world was the union of mechanical workers in Philadelphia. workers were the first in the united states to raise the banner against the ongoing injustice to workers. Engaged in strikes.
The first demand of the workers involved in the struggle was that they should be paid more than they should be paid for their work. Gradually, however, workers realized that they could prevent their labor from being exploited by reducing their working hours. During the 1820s and 1830s, workers fought with the working class to demand 10 hours of daily work. In the united states, the working hours of government employees were subsequently reduced to 10 hours. But this did not benefit ordinary workers.
The workers' struggle for 10 hours continued. At that moment the statement of the Communist party formed by the labor of Karl Marx and Engels had a great impact on the workers. In particular, in the words of Marx, Let the workers of the world unite. You have nothing to lose. A golden world awaits to receive. During the 1850s unions were formed in many places.
The instructions of these unions insisted on 10 hours of work as the demand for 8 hours of work. Their success inspired workers in other countries. The government and the bourgeoisie joined hands and unleashed violence and beatings. On May 4, a protest rally was held in the Hay Market area condemning the state violence. The meeting was very quiet and the leaders were watching the speech. Then, a bomb dropped on someone in the crowd killed an army officer. police opened fire on the workers, who immediately opened fire. Of these, 15 workers were tragically killed. Four people were also sentenced to death in the incident.
May 1, 1891, was declared international Workers' Day by the Second international Union to commemorate to the world the significance of the Chicago struggle. May 1 has been celebrated as international Labor Day since then. For the first time in India, May 1, 1923, was celebrated as Labor Day at our tamil Marina Singaravelar Marina. On Labor Day, a day full of pain, we wish every worker the basic rights and benefits of his labor for the rest of his life.
