The
Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has announced a significant reform in its recruitment process for 2026 that is expected to make it easier for candidates to secure government jobs and ensure that
fewer vacancies remain unfilled after each selection cycle.
What Is the New “Sliding Mechanism”?SSC has introduced a
“Sliding Mechanism” along with a choice between
Fix and
Float options for candidates during the selection process. This new system is designed to reduce the number of vacant posts that occur when selected candidates either fail to attend document verification or do not join the allotted department.
- Fix Option: Candidates choose to keep the post allotted to them in the initial round and will not be considered for higher preferences later.
- Float Option: Candidates choose to wait for higher‑preference posts, and if any such posts become available due to non‑joining of others, they can be allotted based on merit under the new mechanism.
By allowing candidates to opt for
Float, deserving applicants who were slightly lower in merit now have a chance to get their preferred post if it becomes available, leading to
better utilization of merit and reduction in vacancies.
Why This Change MattersSSC has traditionally data-faced the problem of
many posts remaining vacant each year because selected candidates either do not show up for further processing or choose other opportunities. Under the old system, these vacant seats were often lost and pushed into the next year’s cycle, disadvantaging current candidates.The
Sliding Mechanism aims to:
- Ensure maximum vacancy filling in the same year’s recruitment cycle.
- Provide candidates with more flexibility and choice in getting their preferred post.
- Reduce the need to hold multiple rounds of counselling or selection.
- Streamline the overall process and make it more candidate‑friendly.
How the New Process Will WorkFirst Round Tentative Allocation (FRTA): SSC will announce a tentative allocation of posts based on merit and candidate preferences.
Document Verification & aadhar Authentication: Candidates must appear within a given time window for verification.
Fix or Float Choice: Candidates indicate whether they want to
Fix the current post or
Float for higher preferences if they become available.
Final Allocation: Vacant posts resulting from candidates not joining or being absent will be reallocated to eligible Float candidates based on merit.This will produce a
final selection list once, avoiding repeated lists and ensuring seat allocation is efficient and complete.
