World Elephant Day is celebrated on august 12 in order to raise awareness about elephant predicament and to acknowledge the relevance of elephants in our environment. The World Elephant Day theme is 'Haathi Hamara Saathi,' which is a celebration of elephants' role in our environment. Prakash Javadekar, the Union Environment Minister, and venkaiah naidu, the Vice President, both promised their support for the cause in 2020. Many well-known celebrities, public personalities, and politicians from all around the world rallied to our cause.

On august 12, 2012, the first World Elephant Day was held to raise awareness about the situation of Asian and African elephants. The day's event was planned by the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation in thailand in conjunction with Canadian filmmaker Patricia Sims. The Sims has also been a pioneer in World Elephant Day since 2012. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of their preservation and protection. The Society collaborates with over a hundred elephant conservation organisations. Under the banner of "World Elephant Day," the organization's "unbiased" stance permits and promotes campaigns by all groups and people.

The number of wild Asiatic elephants has decreased to under 50,000, which is only 15% of the historic average. Elephants, although being cultural and religious symbols in India, are mistreated by untrained mahouts. Electrocution, train accidents, poaching, and poisoning claimed the lives of many elephants. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), around 440,000 elephants are remaining on the globe, with approximately 15,000 elephants poached each year.

This year's World Elephant Day theme has yet to be announced by the indian Govt; however, previous year's theme was "Haathi Hamara Saathi."
