For the first time, a plant fungal disease spread to humans..?
Doctors say that this is the first time that a human has been infected with a fungal disease caused by a plant. This is said to be the first time in the world that this life-threatening plant fungus has infected humans. The injured researcher was treated at the hospital and has now recovered. Doctors say that he is a plant microbiologist and he works with decaying matter, mushrooms, and various plant fungi for his research.
Continuous exposure to decaying materials may have caused this rare infection. This proves that plant pathogens can also infect humans when in close contact with plant fungi, said a report by hospital doctors in Kolkata. The fungus Chondrosterium purpureum is known to cause a disease known as 'silver leaf disease' in plants. These fungi infect the leaves of plants. Gradually the leaves fall off and the plant dies. The infected researcher had symptoms of cough, hoarseness, persistent sore throat, fatigue, loss of appetite, and difficulty swallowing. He does not have diabetes, HIV, kidney or any other chronic disease. Apart from that he was not taking any anti-inflammatory drugs.
On examination, it was revealed that he had pus in his trachea. Fungal infection was also confirmed. Doctors have operated on and treated the patient. Many new pathogenic fungi have emerged over the decades due to global warming, changing ecosystems, unplanned urbanization, and other activities. In this case, plant fungal infections in humans are considered to be of great importance.
