The forthcoming DCEU project Batgirl has been shelved, with Warner Bros. citing a number of reasons for the choice. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the film's directors, planned to release Batgirl in late 2022. Leslie Grace was slated to play the title character in the movie, with Michael Keaton, who had previously played Bruce Wayne/Batman, serving as a supporting actor. Brenden Fraser, who plays the movie's antagonist Firefly, and J.K. Simmons, who played Commissioner Gordon again, made up the rest of the cast.
It is first difficult to understand why Warner Bros. has chosen not to release Batgirl in any way, especially given that the movie is almost finished. There is a wealth of talent both in front of and behind the camera. Batgirl was anticipated to continue the DCEU's resurgence in the same manner as The Suicide Squad and Peacemakers because of the film's directors' success with Bad Boys For Life and Ms. Marvel. It appeared like WB has the future of the DCEU planned with Keaton also returning to the role of Batman before his rumoured cameo in The Flash in 2023.
When it was revealed that Warner Bros. had no plans to release the movie in theatres or even on HBOMax, many people were shocked. However, one thing that the cancellation of Batgirl might have helped to explain in retrospect is the movie's absence from SDCC 2022. Many believed at the time that Warner Bros. merely intended to concentrate on their more significant 2022 releases, such as Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Black Adam. Sadly, it is now evident that this was more likely due to the studio's stated intention to never release the movie, for a variety of reasons.
