The production company announced that its first day worldwide box office revenue was Rs 75 crore! It is standard procedure to provide local and international numbers separately. However, include worldwide box office receipts would not only impress those who control these statistics (the media and self-styled industry experts), but also mislead the general public. A bigger giveaway was the global total of Rs 75 crore. This amounts to only about Rs 37 core once the cinemas' part is subtracted. This indicates that both the domestic and international box office receipts for the movie were dismal.
A recently released dubbed movie called "KGF 2" (which was dubbed from Kannada) had a first day gross of Rs 53 crore. Even a financially unsuccessful movie, "Thugs of Hindostan," had a huge domestic opening of Rs 51 crore, but it still ended up being a failure. What in "Brahmastra" caused it to only gross Rs 31 crore (as claimed by the producers, despite trade estimates of Rs 22 crore) on its first day of domestic release?
And the majority of these statistics came from upscale multiplex locations in metro areas that screened the 3D version due to the film's significantly inferior performance on single screens and in interiors. In fact, the 2D version screenings in smaller locations were being cancelled due to a lack of an audience.
