In its third week on the
box office, Avatar: The Way of Water has climbed into the top 10 films of all time. The
movie is the eagerly anticipated sequel to 2009's Avatar, which is still the global
box office champ. Because of its enormous budget,
director james cameron previously estimated that the
movie would need to gross close to $2 billion to break even. However, despite a weaker-than-expected debut and being buffeted by dangerous winter weather in the United States, the
movie has shown incredible growth week after week and is already the highest-grossing
movie of 2022.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Avatar: The Way of Water's
box office has risen steadily and shows no signs of slowing down. The
movie, which debuted on
december 16 and is already approaching its fourth weekend in theatres, has amassed an astounding worldwide total of $1.516 billion. This makes it the No. 10 highest-grossing
movie of all time at the global
box office, displacing Paul Walker's final Fast and Furious instalment, Furious 7, which brought in $1.515 billion.
The highest-grossing movies of all time, however, cross the $2 billion threshold after that. It hasn't always seemed like a given that Avatar: The Way of Water would cross that threshold, even though experts currently anticipate the
movie to smash through it. Beyond that, the Nos. 5 through 2 movies, including 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, provide an increasingly difficult challenge.
