The play Abhijnanashakuntalam by Kalidasa served as the basis for Samantha's movie Shaakuntalam. The public and critics' reactions were conflicted when it premiered in theatres on april 14. Shaakuntalam got off to a sluggish start at the box office, taking in barely Rs 5 crore on Day 1. The film's performance hasn't been great; on Day 2, april 15, it took a further decline. Shaakuntalam was expected to do better over the weekend, but it doesn't appear to be the case.

Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and kannada versions of Shaakuntalam were shown on a sizable number of screens. The movie made Rs 5 crore across all languages on its first day, despite not drawing sizable audiences. It performed poorly and experienced a decline on Day 2. Early estimates indicate that Shaakuntalam only made Rs 1.5 crore on Day 2. On Saturday, april 15, Shaakuntalam had a total telugu occupancy of 20.59%.
