Leave the World Behind review-Apocalyptic thriller!!!

In the first scene of Leave the World Behind, a new Netflix original film this week helmed by Mr Robot writer and director Sam Esmail, Julia Roberts's Amanda Sanford declares, "I f***ing hate people." With her husband Clay (Ethan Hawke) and their two kids, Archie (Charlie Evans) and Rose (Farrah Mackenzie), Amanda has organized an unplanned family vacation. But as the world around her gradually collapses and the ambiguities mount one after another, she and the audience are left feeling perpetually afraid.

Leave the World Behind has many of the elements of a M Night Shayamalan story, and it begins so promisingly. After arriving at their location, the Stanfords quickly depart for the beach. Initially, Rose notices an oil tanker and soon learns that it is sailing directly toward the coast. Startled, they flee for their life as the massive vessel slams into the coast. It's nighttime when someone knocks on the door. When the same vacation rental owners decide to come back early and want to stay with the family, what happens next?

Here, Mahershala Ali's character GH Scott and his daughter Ruth (Myha'la) are the owners. They decided to drive back to their house instead after Scott alerts them of the city's blackout. Amanda is shocked that Clay doesn't share her doubts about them right away. However, Amanda is certain that something is afoot when, the next morning, she briefly notices a news alert on a possible blackout and some hacking at work that would signify a national emergency. The ensuing sequences, masterfully rendered by cinematographer Tod Campbell, greatly enhance the intensity of the chaotic circumstances.
