According to the book written on rekha 'Rekha the Untold Story', the occasion was the National Film Awards ceremony. Traditionally, the President honors everyone. rekha received the Best Actress award for the 1981 cult film Umrao Jaan. She reached the stage. The then President neelam sanjiva reddy asked, 'Why do you apply sindoor in your hair part?' Rekha replied, 'In the city I come from, applying sindoor in the hair part is a common thing...it's a fashion!'
Rekha is sometimes outspoken and carefree and sometimes shy. She gained a lot of fame. Until 'Khoon Bhari Maang' was released, Rekha's favorite film was 'Ghar'. After this, KBM made people realize that rekha still has acting skills left in her. This evergreen actress worked on all her shortcomings which used to cover up her qualities.
For example, she was overweight so she did yoga to make herself slim and trim, she did not take formal training in dance but worked so hard that in the classic film Umrao jaan, no one could tell that an untrained dancer was playing the role. Not only this, South indian rekha did not know hindi and Urdu so she learnt them through the characters with full dedication.
She worked on herself and kept giving hit after hit year after year. Nagin (1976), Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978), Mr. Natwarlal (1979), Khoobsurat (1980), Umrao jaan (1981), Khoon Bhari Maang (1988) are some of them. rekha always said that she is an actor and not a star. For her, the character is important, not the main lead. In 1996, she played a negative role in Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, and in her old age, she played a grandmother in krish (2006).
When rekha was asked on Simi Grewal's show what Bhanurekha wanted to do, she said, not an actor at all. I wanted to get married and settle down. I don't know why but I wanted to.
Rekha has said on many occasions that she could never speak her heart openly. She could not express what she thinks. rekha is still challenging herself. Her nonstop performance of 24-25 minutes at the IIFA Awards 2024 is an example of this. In which there was style as well as tremendous dancing.
