Maithili Rao had said in Smita's biography, "One of Smita's friends jyotsna Kirpekar used to read news on bombay Doordarshan and her husband's name was deepak Kirpekar, who was a photographer by profession and during his profession he used to take Smita's pictures often."

During this time, once deepak had gone to Doordarshan Center with her pictures, where as soon as he entered, Smita's pictures fell down and he started arranging the pictures on the ground. During this time, mumbai Doordarshan's director PV Krishnamurthy, who was passing by, saw the pictures. Suddenly he asked, "Whose pictures are these?" Then what happened? When deepak told him about Smita, he said that he wanted to meet her. However, Smita was not ready for this work and she agreed to go to Doordarshan Center only after a lot of persuasion. The special thing is that when Smita was asked to sing something of her choice in the audition, she sang nothing but Bangladesh's national anthem "Amar Shonar Bangla".
