Reportedly the release of the vikram starrer Thangalaan had been long anticipated by fans and it was counted as one of the most awaited tamil releases of this year. But upon release, the film unexpectedly underperformed at the box office, earning just Rs 72 crore. Thangalaan hit theaters on august 15 this year but the film has not been out on OTT as of yet, even after more than two months since the theatrical release.

Perhaps most tamil films follow a 4-6 week window between theatrical and OTT release. It was recently revealed that Netflix would start streaming Thangalaan in Diwali. Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the madras high court by a person named Porkodi from Thiruvallur, seeking to ban the OTT release of Thangalaan. Porkodi’s petition claims that the film contains scenes that reverently portray Buddhism, while Vaishnavism is depicted humorously, which the petitioner argues could fuel tensions between the two religious communities. Given these concerns, the petitioner had requested that the film not be released on OTT platforms until the matter is resolved.

The matter was recently heard at the madras High Court. The petition was heard by a bench of Chief Justice sriram and Justice senthilkumar Ramamurthy. After scrutiny, the bench quashed the petition, stating that there was no objectionable content in the film. The madras high court has ruled that there is no obstacle to the OTT release of Thangalaan. The bench observed that since the film was released with a valid censor certificate, there is no need to impose any restrictions on its wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW">digital release.
