R. Varadarajan and geetha welcomed Mukund Varadarajan into the world on april 12, 1983, in Tambaram, tamil Nadu. Nithya and swetha are his two sisters. In 2009, Mukund wed Indhu Rebecca Varghese, his longtime lover, and the two welcomed a daughter, Arshea Mukund, in 2011.
He received a journalism diploma from madras Christian college and a bachelor's degree in commerce from Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya. Mukund was raised in an army household; both his grandfather and two uncles were active military personnel. He was motivated by this to enlist in the army and defend his nation.
He was appointed Lieutenant in the Rajput Regiment, one of the oldest regiments in india, on march 18, 2006, after completing the Officers Training Academy, which prepares officers for the Short service Commission (SSC). Seven months later, he was promoted to Captain.
On october 18, 2012, he received a promotion to Major while serving in the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon. After that, during a period of increased tension between india and Pakistan, he was sent to the 44th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles, a counterterrorism unit, and stationed in Jammu and Kashmir.
Two weeks after turning thirty-one, Mukund led a squad in south kashmir on april 25, 2014, when he received information about militants in a civilian home. They managed to escape intense gunfire and reach the residence with Sepoy vikram Singh. Altaf Wani, the top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, was their target; he fled, but one fighter was killed.
They found Wani and another terrorist hiding in a cement outhouse, and they used a grenade to murder the latter.
However, Wani shot Singh, wounding him in the jaw and neck. Later, he passed away from his wounds. In retaliation, Varadarajan shot Wani to death.
Varadarajan fell outside the outhouse, although he claimed to be okay. He was shot three times. While traveling to the army hospital, the Major passed away from his wounds. Singh received the Shaurya Chakra, India's third-highest peacetime gallantry award, while Varadarajan received the Ashoka Chakra, the country's highest peacetime gallantry award. President pranab mukherjee presented Varadarajan with the distinction on his behalf on Republic Day in 2015 through his wife, Indhu.
