Umrao jaan was released in the year 1981 in which rekha was seen in the lead role. This film rocked the box office. After the film became a blockbuster, the makers decided to make it again in 2006. This decision proved to be so wrong that the makers went into losses. abhishek bachchan and shabana azmi were seen in the lead roles along with aishwarya Rai in Umrao jaan, which came in 2006. This film caused a lot of loss. The big thing was that aishwarya was not the first choice of the makers for this film. priyanka chopra was offered the role before her but she refused.

According to box office India's report, Umrao jaan was made in 23 crores but this film collected only 7.42 crores at the box office. After which JP Dutta was very disappointed and he was not able to make any film for 12 years. He then made Paltan in 2018. This film also flopped.
