Grand Re-release of Padayappa

Rajinikanth’s iconic 90s blockbuster Padayappa is gearing up for a grand re-release, and in a special video released for fans, the superstar shared some fascinating behind-the-scenes details about the film's casting.

Initial Choice for Lead Actress

Rajinikanth disclosed that Padayappa’s team initially had a different bollywood actress in mind for the role of Neelambari, the antagonist. He said, “We wanted aishwarya Rai to play this character.” Despite the efforts to contact her, aishwarya was not interested in taking on the role.

Rajinikanth’s Willingness to Wait

Rajinikanth further added that the role required a specific personality and that he was willing to wait for 2-3 years for aishwarya to be available. He explained, "I was even ready to wait for 2-3 years because that's how the character was. It was necessary for the role."

Other bollywood Actresses Considered

After aishwarya Rai declined the role, several actresses, including sridevi and madhuri Dixit, were considered for the part. However, Rajinikanth mentioned that the team was looking for someone with "power" in her eyes and the right "ego" to play the character of Neelambari.

Ramya Krishnan Chosen for Neelambari

It was then that director K.S. ravikumar suggested Ramya Krishnan’s name. She was eventually cast and went on to become one of the most memorable antagonists in tamil cinema.

Aishwarya Rai and Rajinikanth’s Future Collaboration

Rajinikanth and aishwarya Rai later worked together in the science fiction film Enthiran (2010), which became a massive hit.

Padayappa 2 in the Works

Rajinikanth also confirmed that a sequel, titled Neelambari: Padayappa 2, is officially in development. The script is being finalized, and production will begin once it is ready.
