According to
minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs
v Muraleedharan, almost 2300
women have been abandoned and divorced by their
nri spouses. Muraleedharan provided the data in response to a question given by
aam aadmi party (AAP)
mp Raghav Chadha. According to him, they had about 2372 complaints from foreign women. In the previous five years, each of them was abandoned. At least one distress call is made every eight hours, the administration informed the
parliament in 2018.
To address problems like domestic violence, harassment, and other matrimonial conflicts experienced by married
nri women, the
government has set in place a number of procedures. For assistance with handling financial and legal issues, the external affairs ministry and the mission/posts overseas frequently offer counselling, direction, and information. Walk-in meetings and open-house gatherings are held at
indian missions and posts. Through MADAD, CPGRAMS, and social media, online consular help is offered. The
minister added that the
indian consulate operates a 24-hour hotline for emergencies.
Another alarming incident included a Gujarati woman from
ahmedabad accusing her
nri husband of forcing her to engage in improper sex. The 35-year-old lady brought the complaint on
monday to the Satellite
police station. She claimed in the complaint that her
husband deserted her in New South Wales, Australia, because she objected to unnatural sex.
