The Academy of Prisons and Correctional Administration (APCA), Vellore, has planned to institute awards for best prisons in the southern states and the prison officials in all the five South Indian states will be under constant scrutiny. One main criterion in the selection process will be as to how prison staff handles inmates.

The academy which trains prison officials anticipates that the prison staff will handle the inmates gently without giving scope for the situation to go out of hand. On Friday the director-generals of prisons of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala will meet in Bengaluru to discuss matters pertaining to running of the Academy.

M R Ahmed the director of APCA has told that the academy will be shifted from Vellore to a new place near Chennai. The Tamil Nadu government has allotted 20 acres of land in lieu of the land it is taking which belongs to APCA at Vellore.

The ministry has sanctioned Rs 20 crores now for the works to be taken up in the first phase. Plans have been chalked out on the construction of the new buildings. These training programs are organized frequently and formulated according to the changing needs of running the prisons and the prison officials from other states also take training at the Academy as per their needs.
