Banks is not responsible for loss of valuables in lockers: RBI
This open statement was let out as an announcement by the RBI to an an RTI response.Shocked by this statement the lawyer ,Kush Kalra has sought an information under the transparency law .This case is has now moved to the Competition Commission of India (CCI).
According to the information got by the lawyer, the reason revaled by the National Banks 19 banks, including Bank of India, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Punjab National Bank, UCO and Canara Bank , and few others , is that "the relationship they have with customers who has lockers is that of landlord and tenant which means the person who owns the locker is responsible for his or her valuables kept in the bank locker.
Some banks declare openly the locker is at the customer's own risk and he or she may go for an insurance if they feel its so valuable and it is truly on the customer's own interest. From the Banker side they will provide a tight security for the locker system and apart from that their responsiblity is over .
