The current party top leadership is alleged to have signaled to chief minister amarinder singh to quit just hours before a gathering of the congress Legislative party (CLP) in punjab on Saturday, allowing for the election of the new leadership. The chief minister, on the other hand, has 'threatened to leave the party because he has been embarrassed. "In the afternoon, amarinder singh informed congress President sonia gandhi that he is being insulted and that he will leave from the organization," a close associate of the chief minister told IANS.

According to certain top party leaders, amarinder singh has been requested to resign officially by the high leadership. The second or two political drama began about 11:45 p.m. on friday when punjabi congress in-charge Harish Rawat posted that an urgent CLP meeting will be held on Saturday. Navjot Sidhu, the state party president, ordered all MLAs to attend the CLP meeting about 12 mins later.

The decision to convene the CLP comes in the wake of a new document signed by a majority of legislators expressing their displeasure with amarinder singh and urging that he be removed from his position as Chief Minister. Meanwhile, the chief minister is on his way to his official residence in this city to meet with party MLAs before heading to the CLP meeting. If there is a desire for the incumbent to be replaced, the chief minister camp may choose to take a firm stance during the conference.
