Saurabh Kripal: The first Gay judge in India...?

The supreme court Collegium has recommended the appointment of senior lawyer Saurabh Kripal as a judge of the delhi High Court. If accepted, he would be the first gay judge in the country.


Saurabh Kripal graduated from St. Stephen's College, delhi and later completed his LLB from Oxford university with a scholarship. He then received his LL.M. from Cambridge University.


He worked for some time with the United Nations in Geneva and then came to india in 1990. Here he advocated in the supreme court for two decades.

Saurabh Kripal was six years old. At the time, his father retired Judge B.J. N. Kripal had become a high court judge. He served in several high courts. That included Gujarat. He later became the Chief Justice of India.


Former Additional Solicitor General (ASG) and senior supreme court lawyer Vikas Singh are close to Saurabh Kripal.

"Saurabh is a very clever lawyer. The recommendation of his name for the post of high court Judge is a good step as well as for the judiciary. The country needs to move forward with the times


Guidance from the former Attorney General

Saurabh Kripal has taken legal lessons under the guidance of former Attorney General and senior supreme court lawyer Mukul Rohatgi. 


Vikas Singh says that Kripal learned a lot under Rohatgi's guidance. That is why the Collegium saw his work in the field of law and thought of his name.

"Saurabh Kripal is very good and he knows the law very well," says Vikas Singh.
