PUCSL President Janaka Ratnayake told Sri Lankan media today that the power tariff increase will be effective from august 10. It has increased the electricity bill for the people who are already without income and employment and it has caused great inequality for the people of Sri Lanka. Through today's announcement, CEB has been permitted to increase the electricity tariff by 264% for consumers of 0-30 units in sri lanka with effect from 10th August. With this, it seems that the maximum fee will be Rs.198.
Janaka Ratnayake went on to say that the bills of consumers with 31 to 60 units will increase by 211% to a maximum of Rs 599, 61-90 units will see an increase of 125 percent, 91-120 units will see an increase of 89 percent and 121 to 180 units will see an increase of 79 percent.
And those in the industrial, hotel and consumer segments earning more than 60% of their income in a foreign currency will have to pay electricity bills in US Dollars (USD). Consumers covered under this scheme will get a 1.5% discount on their electricity bills and the scheme will be effective from september 1, 2022.
The Public Utilities Commission of sri lanka said in a statement today that 50% of the tariff increase will be charged to hotel-type consumers from august 10, 2022, and the remaining 50% will be effective from november 10, 2022.
