A recent petition has been filed in the madras high court asking how income tax can be collected from those whose income exceeds Rs.2.50 lakh per annum when the income limit of the Economically Backward Section (EWS) is Rs.8 lakh. This petition was filed by DMK, the ruling party in tamil Nadu. The petition was filed in the madurai Bench of the madras High Court. The central government has immediately asked to stop the income tax levied on those whose income does not exceed Rs.8 lakh per annum.

Kannur Srinivasan, a member of the DMK Assets Protection Council filed a petition to this effect. The DMK government is insisting that it will not provide ten per cent reservation for economically backward communities in their state. It has recently been announced that the matter will be taken up in court. In this context, a petition was recently filed in court. The central government regulations say that all those whose income limit is less than 8 lakhs are economically backwards poor.

Those whose income is less than Rs.8 lakh have been included in the EWS category. The benefits of the schemes received by them are not taxable. On the other hand, according to the Central Government's Finance Act 2022, tax has to be paid if the income is Rs.2.50 lakh per year. In that case, the restriction imposed on EWS has no meaning.
