Telangana - Boxer Wins Medal in World Boxing Championship
For his nine-month-old daughter Haniya Firdous, Mohammad Hussamuddin wanted to win a gold medal at the just finished World Boxing Championship. However, he ended his Cinderella run in the 57 kg division with a bronze medal despite having high aspirations of making it to the final.
The pugilist, who was born in Nizamabad, the birthplace of 51 kg women's World champion Nikhat Zareen, withdrew from his semifinal match against Cuba's Saidel Horta Rodriquez Del-Rey due to a left knee injury sustained during the quarterfinal round at Tashkent on friday prior. The Cuban-born Bulgarian boxer Javier Ibanez Diaz was defeated by the 29-year-old telangana fighter by a split decision (4-3 after the bout review) to advance to the semifinal.

"Having to settle for a bronze medal is sad. I was certain I would win the gold medal, but in the final five seconds of my quarterfinal match, I twisted my left knee. But even so, I'm glad I was able to take home a medal at a major competition like the World Championship. Hussamuddin remarked, "I dedicate this award to my family, who have been a great support to me.
Hussamuddin added that he felt great right away following the quarterfinal match. But the following day, I experienced some left knee soreness and was unable to put on the ring. I should withdraw, the team management determined, given I have the Asian Games coming up in a few months. I didn't want to make my wound worse. I put a lot of effort into winning this tournament, and I was in a terrific flow, especially after my victory in the quarterfinals.
