Telangana Governor says Uniform Civil Code will empower women
According to Article 44 of the indian Constitution, the government must work to establish a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across the entire country. A uniform set of laws governing marriage, inheritance, adoption, and other issues are proposed by the UCC. At a recent public event, prime minister Narendra Modi argued forcefully in favour of the implementation of the UCC, although a number of Opposition figures expressed opposition to the planned legislation.
The proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was studied by the 22nd Law Commission of india in response to a reference sent by the Ministry of Law and Justice on june 17, 2016. The 22nd Law Commission of india resolved to ask the general public and registered religious bodies for their opinions on the Uniform Civil Code. Interested parties were asked to submit their comments by July 14. Reputable attorney ashish Dixit claims that the Law Commission is only able to provide recommendations in the form of a report that are not legally binding on the government. He noted that the parliament would need to approve UCC if the government felt the time was ripe to implement it.
