One of Telangana's oldest irrigation projects, the Kaddam Narayana reddy Project, in the Kaddampeddur mandal centre, survived the wrath of nature on thursday after being threatened by unusually high inflows. A record intake of water due to heavy rainfall in upstream areas earlier in the day caused the barrage to overflow, putting irrigation department officials on high alert.

Inflows were 3,86,284 lakh cusecs, according to a statement issued by irrigation officials at 7 am. In contrast to the storage capacity of 7.60 TMC, the water level reached 8.067 TMC. By raising 14 of the total 18 gates, excess water is dumped downstream. Four imported German gates were broken, alarming residents and officials. Where the gates were, the water spilled the project.

Two gates lacked counterweights, and the ropes on the other two gates had broken. A rekha Naik, a khanapur MLA, and K varun reddy, a collector, kept an eye on things. The collector gave instructions for 7,000 residents of seven villages to be moved to relief facilities established in government dormitories and schools. Villages such as Devunigudem, Rampur, Munyala, and Godisherala were relocated to relief camps. By ten in the morning, the project that was in the danger zone was visited by Forest minister Allola Indrakaran Reddy. He claimed that starting on Wednesday, a problem had arisen with the four gates. They were working up until a few days ago. The gates could not be raised despite the engineers' best efforts. The problem was being addressed by experts.

The project had a decline in inflows by nightfall compared to the morning, relieving the people and officials. By the end of the day, two gates had been raised using an earthmover and the assistance of neighbourhood kids who had offered Irrigation authorities their assistance. Fortunately, by this point, the project's inflows had drastically decreased. At 6 o'clock in the evening, the project recorded inputs of 1.29 lakh cusecs and an outflow of 2.13 lakh cusecs of excess water. the same scenario in 2022 The project received 5,09,025 cusecs of inflows on July 13 in 2022. By raising 17 gates, extra water was spilled downstream. The discharge at that time was 2.99 lakh cusecs. Ten villages had their residents relocated to safer areas and rehabilitation facilities.

Subsidiary of the Godavari According to the project's history, the dam was built in 1949 over the Kaddam river, a tributary of the Godavari, by the then-former hyderabad government to irrigate 68,150 acres of agricultural lands on the northern bank of the Godavari. It was put into service in 1958.
