In the assembly elections held in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur and goa in the year 2022, the party got only 55 out of 690 seats and only 17 seats in the 182-member gujarat Assembly.In the 2023 karnataka Legislative assembly elections, the congress won 135 seats and came to power. The party won only three out of 60 seats in Tripura, five out of 60 seats in Meghalaya, and did not get a single seat in Nagaland.
At present the party is facing many challenges including the issue of leadership. Former party president rahul gandhi has been disqualified from the membership of the lok sabha after the gujarat High Court's verdict in the defamation case.
Before the 2019 lok sabha elections, the congress was the basis of all opposition unity talks. The ground work was done by both mamata banerjee of Trinamool and telugu desam party supremoChandrababu Naidu. This time Naidu is keeping distance from the opposition camp and Janata Dal (United) leader and bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar is leading the opposition camp.
All india Trinamool congress (TMC): The party led by bengal chief minister mamata banerjee is the third largest party in the country in terms of parliamentary strength with 35 MPs (23 in the lok sabha and 12 in the Rajya Sabha). The party has been in power in West bengal since 2011. However, TMC lost its national party status this year and is currently recognized as a state party in only one other state (Meghalaya) apart from West Bengal.
