Power to assam government to Prohibit Polygamy..!?
Submission of Report to the government of assam by the Committee appointed to examine whether the States have the power to make laws prohibiting polygamy. An expert committee appointed to examine whether the state assembly has the legislative power to enact a law banning polygamy submitted its report to assam Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sharma on Sunday. Sharma posted the photos on Twitter.
Himanta Biswa Sharma said that 'Assam is taking steps towards creating a positive environment for women's empowerment irrespective of caste, creed or religion', hinting that the committee may have submitted its report by the wishes of the government. It was not revealed what recommendations the report contained. If the expert committee report says that the assembly has the power to ban polygamy, the assam government is likely to introduce a bill to ban polygamy in september or January. It will thus become the first state in the country to ban polygamy. Retired Justice On May 12, Himanta had constituted a committee headed by Rumi Kumari Phukan comprising State Advocate General Devjit Saikia and Senior Additional Advocate General Nalin Kohli, and Senior Advocate Nekibur Zaman. It was not revealed what recommendations the report contained.
