Drug abuse among minors rising in Hyderabad

Parents and school administrators are quite concerned about the surge in e-cigarette and drug usage among schoolchildren. The police have sent notifications to a number of prestigious schools, and physicians have reported a substantial increase in the number of youngsters falling victim to the temptation of these substances. In 2022, there were 2,498 occurrences of kids using drugs or smoking cigarettes, up significantly from the 900 cases recorded in 2021, according to government statistics. Despite their being more than a quarter of the year left, the number has already grown by 28% this year.

"Today's youth are becoming victims of addictive substances without realising the dangers," Erram poorna Shanthi Guptha of LB nagar stated. These drugs are guiding them towards self-destruction while they are oblivious to their parents' traumatic experiences. Not only are they hurting themselves, but they are also upsetting their families. We must remove these medications by addressing their underlying causes.

Unwilling to be identified, another Chandanagar father criticised schools for failing to control the problem. "The management of the school seems to concentrate money collecting. In addition, even when a student hasn't done anything wrong, they schedule parent-teacher conferences and complain about them, the parent claimed.

Counselling psychologist Dr. Chennoju Veerender emphasised a 30% rise in drug use among young people. He said that because some medicines might promote exhilaration and delight while others make people feel sleepy, they can create emotional disorders.

"Young people frequently favour the first kind, which causes them to depend on outside sources of happiness. Drug users quit feeling natural emotions and swap out their natural delights with ones that are chemically generated. This may push people to steal or sell drugs in order to maintain their drug usage, the expert said. In the meanwhile, authorities demanded that the threat be reduced through therapy and awareness.

Sandeep Rao, the DCP for Madhapur, stated, "We're working closely with educational institutions to raise awareness and stop this risky tendency. On Sunday, we made a few arrests related to e-cigarettes, which are particularly dangerous for adolescents and young people. We must be proactive since the unsettling trend is escalating progressively. Different states and nations are used as sources for drugs and e-cigarettes, particularly Kolkata, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand.

"We have notified a number of prestigious institutions and are requesting that parents take immediate action to resolve this situation. We respectfully ask that parents and schools watch the kids and let us know if they notice anything important. If not, we will view them as collaborators in illegal activity as well, he said.
