Telangana seeks 20.4 tmc from NSP on priority to meet drinking water needs
The nagarjuna sagar Project's storage levels are quickly running out, hence the State is adamant about putting Hyderabad's drinking water requirements first. In many areas, the project is the primary source of assistance for supplies under Mission Bhagiratha even though it has had no inflows so far this year. To sustain the drinking water supply, he said that the State will need around 20.4 tmc of water from the nagarjuna sagar project system alone. 15.4 tmc will be needed for Hyderabad's water supply from august 18 to May 31, 2024. The requirements of three towns—Nalgonda, Suryapet, and Khammam—would add another 6 tmc. The total amount needed to support the supply of drinking water would be more than the (15.4 tmc and 6 tmc) 20.4 tmc. However, the nagarjuna sagar project's net water availability was just over 10 TMC above its minimal drawdown level.
Andhra Pradesh has been laying claim to more than its allocated share notwithstanding the excess use from the previous year. The KRMB approved AP's request to withdraw 4.21 tmc of water from the NSP right canal. However, the adjoining State asserts that it only received 3.59 tmc.
For the months of august and september 2023, ap has made a new indent for an additional 30.09 tmc (0.08 tmc from NSP and 19.29 tmc from Srisailam). This will cover both its irrigation and drinking water demands. Through the Pothireddypadu head regulator, ap has been collecting water from srisailam beyond the krishna basin. Under the NSP left canal system in telangana districts, not a single drop of water has yet been distributed for irrigation.
