Near Sulur of coimbatore district, the traffic was affected for about 1 hour as the farmers engaged in a protest to break coconuts on the road insisting on various demands. In coimbatore and Tirupur districts, there are lakhs of coconut trees. Since last few months, the farmers are in agony as they are not getting proper price for coconuts and copra. In this situation, various agricultural organizations have been demanding that the government should find an immediate solution to this problem. In order to draw the government's attention to the issue of falling prices, non-partisan farmers' associations are conducting coconut cracking protests in various parts of the district.

As a part of this, the women farmers gathered in Arugambalayam area next to Coimbatore's Sulur broke coconuts on the road and joined the protest. Then there was a commotion because palm oil was poured into the piles of coconuts and set on fire. Traffic in the area was affected for more than an hour as the farmers protested by blocking the road. Following this, the Sulur police arrived at the scene and held peace talks with the farmers and made them disperse.

Talking to the media, the state president of the Farmers' Association, Shanmugam, said, "We have been holding a protest to break coconuts in more than 10 places, including Sulur Karumathambatti, demanding an increase in the purchase price of coconuts, selling coconut oil instead of palm oil in fair price shops, and allowing the unloading of coconuts." We are disappointed as there is no positive announcement from the government. In order to intensify the protest, we are going to hold a protest in Sultanpet Union on the 25th. The protest will continue till 30th in more than 8 places. On the 31st we are going to protest in front of the coimbatore District Collector's office. He said that if no solution is found, we will besiege the chennai Chief secretariat and join the protest.
