Liquor sales in Kerala set a new record in the first 9 days..!?

This year's total liquor sales in the first 9 days of the festive period till Monday, august 28, increased by Rs 41 crore compared to Rs 624 crore reported during the same period last year. The total sale of liquor on Uthradam day at kerala State Beverages Corporation (Bevco) outlets has slightly increased over last year. Last year on Uthradam day, liquor worth Rs 112 crore was sold on a single day, but this year it has increased to Rs 116.1 crore. Besides, the Bevco outlet at Irinjalakuda in thrissur district recorded the highest liquor sales of Rs 1.06 crore on Monday. On the other hand, the Ashramam Bevco outlet in kollam also recorded liquor sales of Rs 1.01 crore.
Apart from this, liquor worth Rs 95.7 lakh was sold at the shop in Changanashery. The other two stores that recorded liquor sales above Rs 90 lakh are court Junction Chertala store (Rs 93.7 lakh) and Payyanur outlet (Rs 91.6 lakh). Uthradam, the ninth day of the ten-day onam festival, is considered an important day and onam festivities begin on this day in some parts of Kerala. On Uthradam day, people celebrate the festival with great preparations to honor the arrival of king Mahabali. Many dishes are prepared from recently harvested fresh fruits and vegetables to celebrate the festival. In 2022, total liquor sales rose to Rs 624 crore in the week before the first day of onam, while the amount was Rs 529 crore during the same period in 2021. Anticipating high liquor sales in the state, Bevco has issued an official notice to all its outlets and directed staff to be cooperative and customer-friendly. The notice requested the staff not to grant any leave during the peak season. In addition, the online payment option should be available to the customers.
