Amit Shah’s meeting with former President Ramnath Kovind
home minister amit shah held a meeting with former President ram nath kovind on wednesday (September
6) regarding One Nation, One election at 12 Janpath Road in Delhi. Ramnath Kovind is the chairman of the
committee formed to explore the possibilities of one nation, one election. amit shah is also a member of this
committee. Union Law minister Arjun ram Meghwal and other officials were also present during the meeting
of Kovind and Shah. In fact, on saturday (September 2), the central government had issued a notification for
the formation of an eight-member high-level committee under the chairmanship of Kovind.
Who are the members in the committee?
Apart from home minister amit shah, the members of the committee are senior advocate Harish Salve, former
Lok Sabha General Secretary Subhash Kashyap, nk Singh, former CVC Sanjay Kothari, congress leader in
Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhary and former leader of opposition in rajya sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad.
However, Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary later refused to be a part of the committee.
What is the work of the committee?
The government has constituted a committee to look into the issue of holding simultaneous elections of Lok
Sabha, State Assemblies, Municipalities and Panchayats and give recommendations as soon as possible. The
committee will examine the Constitution, the Representation of the people Act and any other laws and rules. It
will also recommend specific amendments as these will be required for the purpose of holding simultaneous
elections. The committee will also examine and recommend whether the amendment of the constitution would
require the support of the states. Let us tell you that while advocating one nation, one election, PM Modi has
been saying from time to time that this will save time and money. On the other hand, the opposition is saying
that this will be an attack on the union of the states.
