largest caste of Muslims and OBCs, sided with the Samajwadi Party, Dalits with the BSP, and the upper classes

challenge Mukhtar Ansari, whose name was ajay Rai. Due to the ram temple movement, ajay Rai was also
lodged in varanasi jail. Rai was associated with ABVP, the student organization of RSS. Gradually he started
coming closer to the big leaders of the Sangh.
In the year 1996, bjp politics was at its peak in entire Uttar Pradesh. ajay Rai was a perfect fit in the aggressive
politics of Hindutva. Along with this, he was taking enmity with Mukhtar Ansari in Purvanchal. This year he
was elected mla on bjp ticket.
Even before becoming an mla, his brother Awadhesh Rai was shot. Mukhtar Ansari was accused of this and he
was proved guilty. There was a wave of sympathy in favor of ajay Rai. He was elected mla from Kolsala (now
Pindara) seat on a bjp ticket. He had defeated veteran cpi leader and nine-time mla Udal. ajay Rai had
become a big leader of bjp in Purvanchal. From 1996 to 2007, he kept winning the assembly elections. His
image in the area was that of a domineering Hindu leader.
