According to Nagender Rao, Engineer-in-Chief (Operations and Maintenance), Irrigation, the State government has opted in support of complete rehabilitation of the spillway of the Kaddam project, which has frequently shown challenges in operation and is expected to cost more than Rs 500 crore. He stated that additional operational concerns were dealt with urgently in addition to replacing the counterweight of Gate No. 15 that fell two days ago with a steel counterweight.

The project's flood gates were put in place in 1956. The remaining nine gates were designed using German technology, while nine of the 18 gates were designed using indian technology. He noted that because the technology used to operate the gates is antiquated, maintaining it has become difficult. The State Dam Safety authority's suggestions were thought to alleviate the structural problems.

During the peak flood of more over 5 lakh cusecs in July of last year, the operation of three of the flood gates presented challenges to the engineering experts. The people and the irrigation department were greatly relieved that the dam withstood the flood's wrath despite some of the nearby communities being placed on notice. Stay tuned for more updates.
