New threat of deepfake democracy: Union Minister!?

Union IT minister ashwini Vaishnav has said that deep fakes have emerged as a new threat to democracy. While various celebrities including prime minister Narendra Modi have raised concerns about fake videos and information being created using deepfake technology, in a key meeting chaired by Union IT minister ashwini Vaishnav on this issue, the government has said that the government will soon bring regulation against deepfakes and prepare a draft law in a few weeks.


Addressing reporters after this meeting with social media platforms and artificial intelligence firms, ashwini Vaishnav said deepfakes have emerged as a new threat to democracy. He also said that the creators of such content and the social media platforms where it is shared are responsible and the government is thinking of imposing fines on both the creators of fake content and the platforms where it is shared.

Minister ashwini Vaishnav said that the need for regulation against fakes like deepfakes is clear from the discussions and the work will start immediately and efforts will be made to finalize the regulations in the next few weeks. The minister reiterated that both the creators of deepfakes and the sites that post them are responsible. He also said that regulations would be introduced in the form of new rules, new legislation or amendments to existing rules.
