He is the fourth OBC chief minister of the state from the bharatiya janata party (BJP) since 2003, after Uma Bharati, Babulal Gaur and Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Yadav's appointment as chief minister marks the end of the era of BJP's four-time cm Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who dominated madhya pradesh politics for two decades.
Yadav's appointment as cm, who was not in the cm race, is seen as the BJP's decision to win over the numerically significant Other backward classes (OBC) community in other parts of the country ahead of next year's lok sabha elections. OBCs constitute more than 48% of Madhya Pradesh's population and are the major voter base of the saffron party.
