In the New Year, the government may introduce 'Bharat Rice' at a discounted price of Rs 25 per kg, informed sources said. Before the 2024 lok sabha elections, the government may introduce 'Bharat Rice' at a discounted price of Rs 25 per kg, according to informed sources. Reliable sources say that the central government is considering introducing 'Bharat Brand Rice' at a subsidized price of Rs 25 per kg to counter the rising food prices ahead of the general elections. The decision follows the successful implementation of the distribution of wheat flour and pulses, namely 'Bharat Atta' and 'Bharat Dal'. This year Food grains prices rose 10.3% in november, lifting overall food inflation to 8.7%. To tackle the rising food inflation, the government is going to introduce a policy of providing food grains to the people under the name Bharat Brand. If Bharat Rice is introduced, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of india (Nafed), National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of india (NCCF), and government like Kendriya Bhandar outlets and mobile vans. This rice will be sold through companies.
At present, the government is offering Bharat wheat flour and gram flour at discounted rates of Rs 27.50 and Rs 60 per kg. Bharat wheat flour and chickpeas are sold through 2,000 retail outlets. Food inflation was 8.7 percent in november, 6.61 percent in October, and 4.67 percent in november last year. According to National Statistics office (NSO) data, the price of food grains rose by 10.3 percent over the same period last year.
Food inflation accounts for a significant portion of retail inflation. Retail inflation stood at 5.55 percent in november due to higher food prices. Consumer price index (CPI)-based retail inflation stood at 4.87 percent in October. Inflation eased from 6.83 percent in August. Retail inflation stood at 5.88 percent in november 2022. It is to be noted that already under the Prime Minister's Garib kalyan scheme, rice is being given free to the poor.
