Farmer attempted suicide in front of DC & SP in Yadgir...!?
District collector Dr. B. Sushila and SP G. came to the place on friday afternoon to persuade the protestors to abandon the sit-in. When Hanumantha Pujari, a farmer of Maddaraki village, tried to drink the sterilizer in front of Sangeeta and other officials, the farmer leaders and the police officers who were there stopped him and took away the sterilizer, averting the impending disaster.
Maddaraki's Hanumanta, who has spent 40 lakhs in an area of about 30 acres and has grown chillies, lost his patience saying what is the use of our lives when the crop dries up and when the DC and SP were about to use sterilizers, the farmer leaders and the police stopped and pacified them. The farmers are protesting that the chilli crop sown in the Shahapur branch canal, Jewargi branch canal and Mudabula branch canals has flowered and if water is given to it for another 15 days, it will produce a good harvest.
Thousands of farmers blocked the state highway, locked the office of KBJNEL, tied cattle in the office premises, dug a hole on the roadside and gathered farmers in it, and the sit-in became more active. As the protest of farmers was increasing day by day, district in-charge minister Sharan Basappa Gowda Darshanapura and KKRDB president and mla Ajay Singh's delegation met chief minister Siddaramaiah, but the non-flow of water has increased farmers' anger.
In the meantime, Irrigation Advisory Committee Chairman RB Thimmapura decided not to release water in a video conference held with district Collectors and KBJNEL officials, which has angered the farmers. The information given by the horticulture department about the chilli crop is said to be the reason for the decision not to release water in the meeting. However, the farmers' argument is that the officials of the horticulture department have unclear information.
Apart from drinking water and other, this crop has a large amount of water storage in the reservoir. Farmer leader Mahesh Subedar said that the government, which releases reservoir water to private factories, is delaying releasing water to farmers' crops.
I spent 40 lakhs and grew chillies in 30 acres on the hope that water would come. Farmer Hanumanta Pujari, who tried to commit suicide, expressed his displeasure that the crop is drying up due to lack of water.
