What did Sharad Pawar say? This appeal made to Maharashtra government
As per report nationalist congress party (NCP) president sharad pawar on tuesday appealed to the maharashtra government to take Bilkis Bano's case seriously and keep in mind what the supreme court has said about this 'heinous crime'. . The supreme court on monday accused the gujarat government of misusing its powers and struck down the state government's decision to grant remission to 11 convicts in the case of gang rape of Bilkis Bano and murder of seven of her family members during the 2002 riots. Canceled the order and directed to send the culprits to jail within two weeks.
The gujarat government had granted remission to all the 11 convicts on august 15, 2022 and released them. Reprimanding the gujarat government, the top court had also said that it had 'usurped' the right of the maharashtra government to grant remission to the convicts. The gujarat high court had shifted the hearing of the case from ahmedabad to mumbai after Bilkis Bano raised concerns of evidence being tampered with and witnesses being endangered. 11 convicts in the case can appeal to the maharashtra government to waive their sentence. Addressing a press conference here, Pawar said, "Considering what the woman has gone through and seven of her family members being murdered... I feel the maharashtra government will take this matter seriously." ''
He said, “I request you to take this matter seriously and keep in mind what the supreme court has said about the people involved in this heinous crime. The chief minister of maharashtra and the home minister should take this matter seriously.'' He said that the government should take such a decision which would send a message that such crimes cannot be accepted in the society. Bilkis Bano was 21 years old and five months pregnant at the time of the incident. The rape was committed during the riots that broke out in 2002 after the Bano to Godhra train fire. His three-year-old daughter was also among the seven members of his family killed in the riots.
