Bird habitat in ECR
Anbumani, the head of PMK, has requested to declare the area as a protected bird habitat as tens of thousands of foreign birds flock to the area due to natural water bodies in the east Coast Road area adjacent to Chennai. In his statement in this regard, chennai district and integrated Chengalpattu district are known for lakes.
The watery lakes and surrounding vegetation have made the area a birdlife. Adding strength to this environment, the backwaters and forest reserves that connect to the sea have made the east Coast Road a paradise for birds. However, the rapid deterioration of this environment is alarming.Swamp - Boon for birds
The area starting from Muttukkad and between the east Coast Road and the Old Mamallapuram Road is called the Kelambakkam backwater. This area, which has many abandoned salt flats, is frequented by foreign birds including Pied Kingfisher, Spot-billed Pelicans, Cormorants, Common Sandpipers, pond Herons, Plovers, Terns. Early morning sightings in this area and along the east coast are a delight. The Pallikaranai marshland and the surrounding marshlands are a boon to birds. Most of the Palikarana swamp has been encroached upon; Even though one area has become a garbage dump, the arrival of foreign birds has not decreased.
