The Eastern Nagaland People's Organization (ENPO), demanding a separate administration or state comprising the six districts of Nagaland, was adamant that it would not participate in the elections for the only lok sabha seat in Nagaland until the central government fulfills its demand.
After holding a marathon close-knit coordination meeting with 20 MLAs and various organizations in Tuensang on Thursday, Eastern Nagaland People's Organization leaders on friday again announced their boycott of the april 19 parliamentary elections in the state.
The Eastern Nagaland assembly Members Association, comprising 20 MLAs, requested the Eastern Nagaland People's Organization to reconsider its decision. During the General Emergency, the Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation, the apex body of the seven naga tribes of the region, and its front organizations did not allow any election campaigning.
The Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation, a naga apex body in six districts, and its affiliates had called for a boycott of last year's (February 27) assembly polls in support of its separate statehood demand but later withdrew it following Union home minister amit Shah's pledge.
The Union home Ministry, responding to the demand of the Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation, last year set up a three-member committee headed by North east Adviser, A.K. Mishra to examine their demand, and the team visited Nagaland several times and held talks with all parties.
Nagaland chief minister Naibiu Rio recently said that the state government has already recommended to the central government that an autonomous region should be created for the people of the eastern region.
