In March, a high-level committee chaired by former President ram nath kovind recommended that simultaneous elections for the lok sabha and state assemblies be implemented as a starting point, with local body elections to follow within 100 days.
The Law Commission is also expected to propose holding simultaneous elections for all three levels of government—Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies—beginning in 2029, along with provisions for a unity government in cases of a hung house or no-confidence motion.
The Kovind panel suggested 18 constitutional amendments to facilitate this, most of which won’t need state assembly ratification but will require parliamentary approval. The panel has not set a timeline for the implementation of simultaneous polls.
