Himachal Congress Clarifies Vendor Regulations Amid Controversy
In response to a recent controversy sparked by Urban Development minister Vikramaditya Singh's statement about mandatory identification for street vendors in Shimla, the Himachal government has clarified that no such decision has been finalized. Singh had suggested that all vendors should display their name, photograph, and identification in line with practices seen in Uttar Pradesh.
A government spokesperson emphadata-sized that various suggestions have been received regarding street vendor policies, but a decision on mandatory nameplates has not been made. The government is committed to considering all viewpoints and addressing the concerns of street vendors.
To facilitate this process, a committee has been formed, comprising members from both the congress and BJP, chaired by Parliamentary Affairs minister Harshwardhan Chauhan. This committee will review stakeholder suggestions and provide recommendations to the state government. Once the committee submits its report, the cabinet will evaluate it before any final decisions are made.
Vikramaditya Singh's original remarks had raised concerns, especially regarding the enforcement of food safety standards and licensing for vendors selling items like momos and noodles. The government’s clarification seeks to assure vendors and the public that any policies will be developed with careful consideration and input from all parties involved.
