Accidents, Contracts, and Scams: How MEIL Keeps Winning in Telangana?
On november 6, 2024, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K. T. Rama Rao (KTR) called on the telangana government to blacklist Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) in light of the collapse of the retaining wall at the Sunkishala project. ktr questioned why the government had failed to take action, despite a government-formed inquiry committee concluding that MEIL’s negligence led to the accident. Additionally, ktr demanded the cancellation of the contract awarded to MEIL and Raghava Construction for the Narayanpet-Kodangal Lift Irrigation Project, accusing the companies of involvement in a corruption scam.
The controversy surrounding MEIL intensified when ktr pointed out that the congress government had previously criticized the company, with congress leaders calling MEIL a "mafia" and even labeling it as the "East india Company" when the party was in opposition. He questioned why the same government, despite its committee’s recommendations, continued to work with the company, particularly in relation to the Narayanpet-Kodangal project.
The Narayanpet-Kodangal Lift Irrigation Project, initially designed by former chief minister K. chandrasekhar Rao to irrigate two lakh acres in Narayanpet and Kodangal, was renamed by the congress government, reducing the irrigation coverage to one lakh acres. ktr alleged that internationally recognized companies like L&T and NCC had been disqualified during the technical bid process, leading to the awarding of two major project packages—worth Rs. 4,350 crore—to MEIL and Raghava Construction. He demanded that chief minister A. revanth reddy clarify why these companies were selected and suggested possible commissions being involved, linking it to larger corruption allegations.
ktr also raised concerns about MEIL's recent donation of Rs. 200 crore to Skill university and warned that a further project worth Rs. 5,520 crore was being planned to pump water from the Mallannasagar reservoir to Gandipet and subsequently to the Musi River. He reminded the government that just a short while ago, the congress party had accused the BRS government of corruption in the kaleshwaram project, claiming it had been "washed away" and was part of a Rs. 1 lakh crore scam.
Moreover, ktr questioned the government's failure to take action against Revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivasa reddy, whose alleged involvement in a scam was being investigated following raids by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). He accused both congress and bjp of being complicit in not taking action, despite ED raids on reddy -Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW">srinivasa reddy that had taken place weeks earlier.
Finally, ktr criticized the bjp for its inaction against corruption, calling on them to launch an inquiry into the AMRUT scam. He specifically alleged that a Rs. 1,137 crore contract under AMRUT was awarded to the Chief Minister’s brother-in-law, adding fuel to the fire of corruption allegations against the ruling party.
The BRS continues to highlight what it claims is the congress government’s failure to address corruption while accusing it of selectively awarding lucrative contracts to politically connected entities. This development points to an ongoing political battle in telangana, with ktr at the forefront, demanding accountability from both congress and BJP-led administrations.
