Former uttarakhand chief minister and senior congress leader Harish Rawat expressed deep concern over the defeat of congress in the kedarnath by-election in a press conference held at his Defense Colony residence. Harish Rawat called it a defeat not only of the congress but of the entire Uttarakhand. He said that the public has failed to understand the sentiment of those who talk about saving "Uttarakhandiyat".

Harish Rawat said that the congress fielded a candidate who dedicated his life to protecting the interests of Uttarakhand. Speaking about congress candidate Manoj Rawat, he said that Manoj raised important issues like land law and domicile in 2018. Apart from this, he has also done impressive work on topics like migration, employment and women's safety. The former chief minister said that the party was hopeful that the public would bless the person who raised his voice to protect the interests of Uttarakhand. He said, "It is extremely worrying that the public rejected a person who always talked about the welfare of the state."

Harish Rawat expressed his disappointment over the election results and said that this defeat is not only the defeat of the congress but also the defeat of those issues of uttarakhand on which work should have been done. He said that this is the time for introspection and it has to be seen why the public is not able to take the issues of Uttarakhandi identity seriously.
